This gemstone is found exclusively in Western Australia. The stone is located in a highly restricted area of the Gascoyne region in the remote Australian outback.

Mooka Creek: It is mined from the dry riverbeds and stream channels of Mooka Creek, which serves as the primary repository for the stone.

Mooka Station: The creek runs through a massive, private pastoral lease (sheep station) called Mooka Station, on the western side of the Kennedy Range National Park. The word "Mooka" is believed to originate from a local Aboriginal term meaning "running waters," referencing the freshwater springs feeding the area.

Mookaite's formation required a highly specific, rare sequence of prehistoric events. Around 120 to 145 million years ago (during the Cretaceous period), the region was covered by a shallow ocean. Billions of microscopic marine organisms called radiolaria died and left behind silica-rich skeletons on the seabed. When the oceans receded, groundwater rich in silica and iron minerals filtered through the sediment. This unique chemical cocktail solidified into a hard, multi-colored rock, perfectly matching the deep reds, mustard yellows, and cream tones of the Australian desert.
